Functioning as a procurement engineer and ISO 9000 consultant, I show how current good manufacturing practice can achieve lean manufacturing goals for medical circuit boards and the medical device manufacturer. Medical device manufacturing requires close attention to FDA GMP and FDA CGMP requirements. I apply a six sigma consultant and good manufacturing practice approach using IPC 610 and J Std 001 standards and a DFM approach to overcome problems such as high impedance and partial discharge associated with the closer spacing of components in PCB design technology of today and the future. For the medical device manufacturer, new requirements as lead free soldering and RoHS require lean manufacturing to meet cost goals in PCB design.
